Model of the week Sasquatch

I just received this small Sasquatch bowie with custom fossil walrus ivory handle with left hand palm swell. They guys at the shop did a fantastic job as usual and now I have a really special Randall.

It is not just ironwood

Peter,
The color on that is amazing. I wonder what it fossilized in to get that color.

Peter, I concur completely with Rick! The knife with that handle is quite stunning. Congrats on acquiring such a spectacular Sasquatch

However upon closer examination of the "fossil walrus ivory", I have come to the conclusion that the material is actually fossilized Ironwood.

Cheers!

David

Very classy, Peter! I suspect it's not a user, but I'm curious if the handle is larger than what might be considered to be comfortable if it was used.

Best,

Thanks David, Ron and Tom

Ron, it won't be a user, I don't think too many of the Sasquatches are users, and I was hoping to have a large Sasquatch, but the shop didn't think the material would work with the 3/8 stock. The back of the handle is a little large for me as my hands are on the smaller side, but I think it could be used if necessary. It is a little butt heavy with the massive nickel silver butt cap.
I already know a guy who wants to buy it if I would ever decide to sell it, but I have no intentions.
I am really happy with the way it turned out, and here is a photo of the FWI before

Ron and Peter know this but for those that don't.... here's the FYI on FWI.

The natural size and shape of the Walrus tusk (incisor) makes Fossil Walrus ivory a challenging handle material. The tip, which comes closest to being symmetrically shaped, may not currently be used as a Randall handle. The section adjacent to the tip begins to get chunky as you can see in the image below. This wouldn't be much of a problem if the circumference of a Walrus tooth was round like an Elephant tusk but as you can see, the cross section of a Walrus tusk in this area is twice as long as it is wide. If the size requirements for a particular knife, like a large Bowie, are 1-1/2" X 1-3/4" X 5" that means the narrow part of the material must be 1-1/2 inches and the width will be close to 3 inches. With the high cost of FWI and the increased likelihood of cracking the Randall craftsmen are disinclined to do a great deal of grinding on this material so you necessarily end up with a oversized handle.

Peter: All confirmed with thanks! Most of the Randalls I've seen with Walrus tusks have been wall hangers. Same with a lot of the Sasquashes no matter what handle. There was one guy a number of years ago who claimed he was using a large Sasquatch to clear the jungle in South America!

By the way, I have a customer in Allentown, Pa. and go there from time to time. How close are you to that town?

Rick: Good info / thanks!

Well, shucks! That kind of rules out having a beer with you: I usually fly into Newark and drive in from there. My time is usually tight. Maybe I'll meet you at the Blade Show some year.

If you need to visit your customer mid November, the New York Custom Knife show is November 18,19, 20 in Jersey City. I am planning on attending as my sister lives in central NJ and I can stay there, Newark airport is close to Jersey City too
We met at the 2010 Blade
I am also hoping to make the Blade show in 2012 too

Peter
