Found a cheap mini tapper
I've just found what seems to be a decent tapper for only $15

No Alex, that is only the adapters for the tapper and not the tapper itself. The best price you'll be likely to find is about $40 on a tapper from HF when they are on sale.
If you look in your MSC catalog (you do have one by now, right?) you can find several tappers of different designs that are under $20 . One kind is called a 'piloted' tapper. These mount in your drill press to hold the vertically but you use them by hand without turning on the drill press. You can also find the regular type ot T handleled tappers that you just hold in your hand excepth that they have very long handles. Using one of these, you can build your own hand tapper like the one shown in the picture of the link you provided. That's what I did many years ago and I'm still using that same home made tapper. There's another one that is a stand alone unit that is small and very compact. I have a brand new one that I bought for a class I was teaching. I don't see this type listed in MSC any more. It's never been used and I'd be happy to sell it to you for $25 if you want it ... |

Alex,
That is just for the tap adaptor, not the tapper itself. The tapper itself is $120. If you search for "cedarberg mini tapper" on the page you'll see the tapper and 6 tap adaptors. I think for your $120 you also get the full set of adaptors, but it's hard to tell because of the way the descriptions are worded. This seems to be on the high side for a tapper of this type. I've seen them for under $100. David __________________ Broadwell Studios LLC Fine Art Knives & Writing Instruments http://www.david.broadwell.com |

I use one of the piloted tappers you put in a drill press like Ray describes. It was cheap and works very well. I got mine either from MSC or Enco - I forget which. It would be nice to have one of those nice little dedicated bench-top tappers, but the drill-press type guide works well enough. A secondary benefit is you can use it in a lathe if you ever go down that road. I use mine now in the drill press to tap liners, and I use it in the lathe to tap barrel pivot pins.
