Hone Pocket or No-Hone?
Whenever I order an RMK knife, I always, without exception, specify a no-hone sheath. (I usually specify a black sheath as well, but that often depends on the color of the handle material.) The hone pocket represents tremendous bulk in what can become rather low-profile. For some of my knives that came with a standard (with hone pocket) sheath, I have ordered a spare no-hone version.
The hone pocket looks terribly out-of-place on larger knives, such as Doug Kenefick's Large Sasquatch: $4-6" #6 Grind with no-hone (and black) sheath: #15 with no-hone (and black) sheath: Thank goodness that the #28 comes with a no-hone sheath: As does Rick Bowles' "Bowles Skinner": |

I think If I get a Black sheath, that's when I would go no-hone. For a tan sheath I will get it with a hone pocket.
I have one black sheath, a Hi-ride for a #23, and it looks great with the black micarta handle. __________________ Rob Frey Last edited by DTHN2LGS; 09-27-2012 at 06:17 PM. |

I always felt that there were two things that announced that this is a Randall knife, The first was the exposed nut on the butt and the second was the hone pocket on the sheath. I now realize that neither is functional but I still like the hone pocket even though the hone is not good for much..... I'm old school.

I agree with you 100%. I am a black sheath, no hone fan. Having said that, not all my knives are that way. But anything I order, that I am able to have a black sheath with no hone, I do so. Great pictures BTW. __________________ ----------- Rod Brown RKS 3846 |
