RMK Triathletes
I recently received two Randall Made Knives non-catalog Triathletes and had the great craftsman, Don Hedrick put handles on them using my material.
Of course, one is ironwood and the other is carbon fiber. Even better he found some dog paw mosaic pins for the carbon fiber one. Peter __________________ Peter Kaufman NRA Life GOA JPFO SAF RKS # 5642 Shag #005 Last edited by Rick Bowles; 03-30-2012 at 08:35 AM. |

Looks great Peter, what does the other side scale of the Ironwood look like?

The other side looks about the same, the two pieces were book matched Peter __________________ Peter Kaufman NRA Life GOA JPFO SAF RKS # 5642 Shag #005 |

The more I see carbon fiber scales, the more I like them. Do you know if the material is difficult to work with? Secondly, how would you compare the cost of a set of CF scales to ironwood? Thanks Rod __________________ ----------- Rod Brown RKS 3846 |

Rod,
Don Hedrick has done a few Triathletes for me so I asked him about the carbon fiber. The cost of the CF slabs are actually less than nice ironwood. However, the carbon fiber is much harder to work and, like mother of pearl, the dust given off while grinding is extremely hazardous. Don Hedrick does an excellent job on these little Randalls. Here's a few he's done for me. |

Thank you for your reply. The scrim on the first knife is superb. Great color and detail. I really like, what I assume to be Fossil Ivory, on the second one. Rod __________________ ----------- Rod Brown RKS 3846 |

Rod,
That material is called "Crackle" Mammoth ivory. It's hard to come by and pretty pricey stuff. I just finished the Triathlete with the American Kestrel. |

I know the carbon fiber is hard to work and you should wear a good dust mask when working with it. The ironwood for my Triathlete was some left over from a piece that had to be cut down to make a handle for another knife and the carbon fiber was left over from a project where I worked, essentially too small for anything else, but I think in general it isn't too costly. I had the rehandle in mind when I ordered the knives and Don was kind enough to put the scales on for me Peter __________________ Peter Kaufman NRA Life GOA JPFO SAF RKS # 5642 Shag #005 |

Thank you for your replies. Rick beware of a strange woman (my wife) breaking into your house and "borrowing" the triathlete. She was blown away by your work, the American Kestrel. __________________ ----------- Rod Brown RKS 3846 |

Hi folks!
For me the Triathletes are pretty unexciting in their plain Jane state. However looking at the the above examples, there's no doubt that the great talents of both Don and Rick can transform these blah blades into beauties to behold! Cheers!
