Differential clay hardening in a multiple quench cycle

If one were to perform three separate quenches on standard 10XX steel, at what point in the cycle would be the best time to add the clay? I'm leaning towards placing the clay on the blade's spine prior to the final quench. What do you guys think?

Thanks,
LT

Never tried that, but if I was going to I'd probably do it on the last one.
