Hey Rick,
If ever a Randall knife was "killer", I'd put that label on that Model 12! Really great piece. Thanks for sharing. While I'm at it, I picked up a miniature Model 3 that Tom built in '63 or '64. It's a lil' buddy companion to my 3-6 now: Best, Ron |

I am in awe of the work shown here... incredible... Ron your trunk must be dang deep!
Never much considered scrim for any of my knives because of what I tend to acquire, old combat knives. Hummm... maybe I'll change my mind ... the knife below was sold some time ago. It isn't Leschorn, but perhaps this type of scrim I might consider.. disturbing though... Last edited by Jacknola; 07-18-2013 at 08:46 PM. |

I'm looking for information on some of Tom's knives. Were any of the blades on his customized knives etched with an "L" beside the Randall logo stamp? I recall White's knives had a "W", but I don't recall seeing another one with an "L"......

I have a Randall that has an 'L' stamped on it but its not customized as many/most of the Leschorn's were.
I wonder if all Tom did was finish it without embellishment. __________________ "He who seeks refuge in price often takes the worst soaking" |

Bill,
I have two Leschorns with carved initials in ivory inserts. One has "TWL" and the other "TL". I believe he only used his middle initial on some of his earliest work (Before he started carving or engraving the handle or hardware). I don't remember seeing an "L" before. Where is this letter placed on the knife? Here are pics of my most recent acquisition: Beaucamp has a new book out with a large section on Leschorns. I just went through it and there is no mention of an "L". Sorry, |

505Gibbs, I have seen and/or owned several less than ornate Leschorn knives. Not all were done in intricate fashion. But there are some telltale signs, including the "L".
Ron, the "L" is etched beside the Randall stamp on the blade. Here is a pic of mine in question. (You may also like to know that the very first knife that Tom did for Bo was a Model 3!) |

10-4 on the "L" position, Bill. Thanks: I read that same piece of information in Beaucamp's book this morning. He went on to say the carving was in the ivory handle and that knife is on display in the museum.

Ron that is an awesome knife with a patina that speaks of age and value. Bill thanks for the data on the "L."
I do like to understand minutia, and sometimes interesting questions arise. For instance... to acid-etch a blade requires effort and special equipment including pantograph, chemicals, acid bath, etc. So I wonder why someone would go to all that effort to etch only a single "L" (perhaps a name is on opposite side?) if TL were simply putting an un-adorned handle on a knife. Especially it it were only distinguished from a shop handle by the spacers? And when would the "L" be etched on the blade? At the shop or by someone else afterwards, but before the handle was installed? Were certain blades dedicated to TL by the shop and marked "L" at the shop before delivery? This is all just curiosity and of minor importance. But it does illustrate the need to ask logical questions when something is not fully explained, ...even minor "somethings." I love mysteries. Mine is a 3-5 with the 'L' stamped/etched behind the Randall stamp and other than a beautiful wood handle is without embellishment.

You may need to flip my picture, but it is clean on the reverse side of the blade.

I blew Bill's photo up until it pixelated... and it seems that the "L" may be scratch-engraved rather than acid-etched. That would make good sense and could be done long after the blade was made and the knife handle installed. Any good trophy shop could do it. It would also be very easy for an artisan such as TL to do, contrary to the requirements of acid-etching. To confirm we would need a really high res picture and a magnifying glass, but scratch engraving would be my default guess.
