worlds smallest railroad spike knife

I forged this tiny little knife from an antique spike that I found over the weekend in a shop in an amish community near my town. They only had two of these tiny little spikes unfortunatly, I dont know what kind of steel they are made from bu this one seemed to harden up pretty darn good.

I have a knife just like that. I got the railroad spike from my grandfather who was a retired railroad conductor. After he passed away my brother found two of those spikes and sent them to me. He said I could have one if I made a knife for himout of the other one. I made knives with both.

I have been trying for about seven or eight years to find more of them. I have started making my own of that size. Working on a damascus one of that size to match a full sized damascus RR spike knife.

Kinda weird, they only seem to come in pairs.

They must have come from the Leprechaun Railway over in Old Ireland. I wonder if railroad spikes is what they really are. Anyway, nice looking knife..... Can you tell me how big it was before you started hammering on it? I'd guess 3 1/2 X 3/8"
, believe a quarter is 1" if I'm not mistaken.....

My guess is that they came from the narrow gauge railroads used to move minerals out of mines.

Your measurement is close but I don't remember the actual measurements since mine were done so long ago.

Bob, You know I think your right, didn't happen to think along those lines. The man that I bought my last anvil from has sort of a blacksmithing and mining museum. Next time I'm out that way I'll check with him if he's still alive......
