Stag: straight versus curved

Ignoring Crown Stag for the moment, I tend to see that Stag tends to come in either straight or curved variety.

Here is an example of nicely-curved Stag (Glades Hunter #62):

Here is another example (#5-5"):

However, its seems that ordering a Butt Cap (not a Butt Plate) can help if one prefers straighter Stag, as shown in the specimens below (#5-4", #21, #23, and Combat Companion):

Sometimes you can get straighter Stag without a Butt Cap, as exemplified by these #5-6" specimens:

Where am I going with this? Well, along the same lines as the Sawteeth/no-Sawteeth grind, perhaps there could be a Buttcap/no-buttcap option, which is really a roundabout way of specifying straight Stag. One of my #5-5" knives was originally ordered (not by me) with straight Stag, so this was once possible.

Excellent observations (and knives) Ken!

I can't recall seeing any curved stag handles with a buttcaps. Of course I could be wrong.

However, I have noted an almost infinite number curved butts...

DW, would you bring this suggestion to Gary Randall and post his reply. Thanks!

Cheers!

David

I like a little drop in the handle, it accentuates the traditional Randall "S" profile. At the risk of speaking for Scott or Gary, I'm guessing the shop will not add any options while they are so far behind. Ken, you get some great stag for sure!

With a near 15 yr embargo on stag, we are lucky to have a supply to continue to even offer stag handles. We cannot begin to be choosy as to which knives are to get curved or straight stag, so... no , I will not bring this up to GTR.

By the way, as far as the shop being "so far behind", we prefer the term "booked ahead"!

The Buttcap/no-buttcap option, as a way to specify straight Stag, was mainly posted in jest. I also realize that we're incredibly lucky that Stag can still be offered as handle material for thse excellent knives.

Great stag Ken

I like straight stag on knives with symmetric blades, like the model 2 and Tom Clinton Special, but on other knives curved or straight is fine. The more color and texture the better

My dad ordered a #2-8" through Gary Clinton late last year, and it just came in. It has a straight Stag handle whose material was supplied by Gary Clinton. My dad should receive it any day now, and because I will be visiting my parents in early October, I'll have a chance to see it soon.

That #21 was ordered through Gary Clinton about a year ago, and came in a couple months ago. It turned out quite nice. I am very pleased with its Stag, which was shop-supplied.

Now here's a really old photo I made of one of my Randall knives with curved stag and butt cap. I'm guessing the apparent pattern suggested (partly in jest) by the OP could be the result of a small non-representative grouping. Help me out with the model designation of this one. I need to check my paperwork but I think it may be a non-catalog model or...

I love curves as much as anyone but what I love about Randall knives is that they are all a little different, even within the same model line. Over time I've come to appreciate my straight handled ones through handling and use. If one is simply looking at them I'd guess the curved handle might have more appeal. The same could be said of highly textured stag as opposed to smoother less textured examples. My Randall carving set, for example, doesn't have what some might call 'the best stag' but every time I get the set out and use it, it never fails to satisfy. It doesn't occur to me anymore to wish the handles were different than they are, though I admit at first, for example, that I wasn't so sure about the super straight stag handle on my #27 Trailblazer.

Hi Buddy!

Your beautiful Bowie with the "slightly" curved handle is a non-catalogue model #12-9 with a #14 grind.

The statue of the three Eagles is equally impressive! What's the material?

Cheers!

David

Hey David - Thanks for the ID - That I can't ID my own knives proves what a light weight I am compared to others here. Or maybe it just reveals my lesdyxia... or dyslexia... whatever. The eagles are carved from bone. It sure is nice to see the increased activity here on the Randall Knives Forum!

It strikes me that "straight" stag handles on knives with butt caps may be something to do with the fact that the tang will be more centrally located in the butt the straighter the stag,I suppose that if there where an exagerated curve the tang would be dramatically off centre, maybe the cutlers take this into consideration when assembling the handles.
