Trench Knives

Another cool looking Randall blade trench knife! Jacknola mentioned these in a post a year or two ago. I have a neighbor in walking distance from me with almost an identical one in his collection.

Here is one that Behring rehandled and Miles Welze had in his possession.....

Someone had a good idea to put a handle on a throwing knife.

The handle is from a Mark I 1918 trench knife made for WWI. About 1.3 million of these were ordered, but only maybe 200,000 (?) or so were made. Many were never issued. The Mark Is were issued in WWII to special troops, rangers, airborne (?) etc., but later replaced. These are pretty popular to collect and a fair amount of counterfeits have been made.

The cool thing about the Mark I knife is that there are quite a few available in poor condition, and if the original blade is corroded, the bronze handle is easily recycled. I've seen pictures of a number of these handles with the blade replaced by a Randall Model 2 ... and it makes for a wicked and handsome knife.

Here is one for sale at an on-line auction.

A few years ago a model 14 Solingen blade without handle was for sale on E-bay. I drew up plans to make a "Trench-14." I never followed through.. but here are the plans.

That is quite a hump on that old Solingen.
