Anyone know what this is?

This is my gift for myself. I finished it today, my 77th. birthday.

A little puzzle: Can you tell me what it is?

Looks like a Dog Bone folding Bowie. I believe they were popular in Europe.

Andy, I had forgotten about those. I've made 3 or 4 of these. The first was made from an original brought to me by a man from South America whose father had been ambassador to Spain. He told me it was a family heirloom that had been in the family about 60 years at that time, several years ago. His father had purchased it in Spain.

He asked me if I could make one like it to pass along to his son. So I said, "if it's a knife, sure I can!"

He left it with me so I could measure all the dimensions and duplicate it as well as possible.

The blade on this one is 154CM.

Integral liners/bolsters are made of 416 SS.

Stag scales.

And it's a plain old slipjoint with a moveable latch that locks the blade in the open and closed positions.

That beautiful sheath was made for me by Paul Long, "Sheathmaker" on these forums.

I don't know if I'm still in business, Dave.

I think I may go back to painting for awhile.

Don,
Happy birthday!
I've been lurking here for a while and your work impresses me. I'm thinking of starting this "habit". Always liked knives and making things (mostly wood) so why not take the plunge.

Regarding your knife. It is a very nice rendition of a historic German style for hunters. Folded it makes a handy knife. Unfolded and at full length it makes an excellent "saufaenger" used to kill a wounded wild pig. Here is a link a knife from a German hunting store.

Again happy birthday from Germany

Hammer-52, you are exactly right!

When I made the first one, I researched the history and found out that it was a "Woodsman's folding sword". Used to put to death an animal wounded by a hunter.

The history goes back to the European feudal system.

Since I speak no German, I couldn't find the knife on your site. Can you point me directly to the knife?

Yes, get interested in knifemaking. It will consume you.

Saufaenger or Folding Bowie Knife

Wild pig killing knife designed after an historic example with belt sheath out of leather and deer horn scales. #Closed it #forms a very compact knife. #The nickel silver - locking device works to open the blade. Blade length closed: about 10,5cm, opened: #19cm. #Weight: #400g. #
An interesting thing about this knife is it's name "saufaenger" which is a combination of #"saufaeder"#and "hirschfaenger". #A "saufaeder" is usually mounted on a pole like spear and a "hirschfaenger" being almost a short sword. #Sau is a female pig and hirsch is deer.
Here is the website for the exact item at Frankonia.de
http://www.frankonia.de/349613/25002...ategoryId=6653
If that does not work go to Frankonia.de and put the article number in the suche (search) block then click "Los"#The#Art.-Nr. is: 156723-65.
The knife is made by Hubertus Solingen. #After a little research I found that the "English" speaking world calls them a "folding Bowie" knife.

Hope that helps.
Mark

Don,
I'm working with the Army now in Germany after 23 years in the US Air Force. Due to access to equipment and tools I'm going to focus on kit builds and customizing them until I return to the USA. Then if I'm addicted I'll invest the money in proper steel cutting equipment. Starting out this way will also let me know if this is a habit I will enjoy.
Thanks
Mark

Don,
First, let me wish you a belated happy birthday. Second, I am really impressed with that knife. Third, I must be an air head because I spent several minutes wondering why the blade of the knife in the first picture was shorter than the blade of the knife in the next set of pictures.
