Legit Smithsonian?

An eBay offering. http://m.ebay.com/itm/181951638905?_mwBanner=1

A few things don't seem right about this knife.

The eBay offering the top clip doesn't look right. It flattens out too much

A legit similar Smithsonian. Notice the clip has a continuous curve?

EBay offering coolie cap. I know Randall did many variations, but this one?

Legit coolie

EBay offering sheath. Seller claims keeper was changed. Something odd about the stitching. Maybe on of Johnny Johnson's?

I may be totally off base, but the eBay offering puts up a red flag for me. What do you think?

the grind is just not right. I do not think it came from the shop that way. The sheath has been tampered with as well.

Hi Sam,

I think it was originally a legit knife that was subsequently modified in the ways you mention. The sheath looks like a Stockman whose keeper also subsequently modified.

Thanks Rocky and Ron for your comments. There is something about the shape of the commando handle where the coolie cap joins. Ron, are you thinking it has been rehandled, clip shape changed?

Another difference is the shape of the ends of the hilt. The eBay example hilt comes to a sharp point at the ends. Did the shop do them this way?

The eBay knife hilt

The standard hilt shape, blunted at the end.

Here is another 12-11 with a bit sharper end. Does it appear as sharp to you?

Best photo available of stamp

A better photo of the top clip

This all brings to mind something Scott Maynard the Randall shop foreman said a while back. Custom, hand made. There will be differences. So does this knife fall into that category?

Regards, Samg

Here is a sharper version of a Smithsonian hilt, so they were made that way as well. Blunt, and more sharp.
So perhaps just a alteration of the top clip.

Ron I think that's a very late Johnny Johnson made sheath. His quality really went down in his last years.

Ron, this one that you attributed in the "The Case of the Mysterious 3-6 Sheaths" thread on this forum, you listed this sheath as a Stockman. It doesn't have a stamp, and the butterfly is completely different. Was stockman making sheaths in the baby dot era?

Sam: That will teach me to post before I have fully woken up (It was 5 AM my time). Please disregard my Stockman comment. He made no sheaths during the baby dot era. Ronnie: I suspect you are right about the maker and associated timing.

Back to the drawing board.

Best to both,

Ron
