Gem Pins
I've been searching for some time now for new ways to use gem materials in my handles. Finished this one the other day, and have several more in the works with "gem pins". So far, I only have done softer stones like Lapis and recon turquoise - but I'm getting my diamond lapidary equipment set up and hope to be cutting a wider variety of stones soon.
Let me know what you think. Michael |

I like that, great idea. Malachite would look great done like that.

That is such a cool idea! That really takes the blank surface of the pin and adds some "oomph!" to them. Really makes the handle a thing of beauty. Not to mention something out of the ordinary.
Nice work! |

Very nice! Striking contrast in color. The biggest problem I've run into with stone work is once you start using the harder material and you get to the final finish polish stage. The differential hardness transition between the guard, the stone, and the wood make the transitions very difficult to control. You'll be going from dry sanding/polishing to wet and that affects the softer materials, say wood, undesireably. It can be very frustrating so plan way ahead.
I've been trying to incorporate some amazonite, labrodite, jade, etc. into my knives each stone presents a different set of finishing techniques so it's always a challenge. Good stuff so far, good luck! Great idea, I use a lot of recon stone and you have opened up a new area for us. Gib

Wow! Thanks for the response guys, and the kind words.
Bob, I have a box of malachite in storage - haven't seen it in about 12 years. I'll have to dig it out. I agree, it would look good. Crex, I have done some jade and Quartz materials in spacers - had to cut and polish them separate from the rest of the handle. A lot of work, but worth it I think. I figured I'd have to do the pins the same way - finish the handle, finish the pins and then assemble. I think I could use the empty brass tube to pin the handle and then just finish the stone to size and epoxy it in. Michael |

Michael,
Sounds like a plan. Jade should be no problem but quartz and other chip-prone stones may develope stress cracks and fracture if fit to snug when the surrounding material begins to "move " with the environment. I'm not sure it would be a problem just thinking out loud. I've had a few cabochons crack weeks after they were set in their bezels. They were fine when I first mounted them and had not been handled by anyone. Hey, go for it on a test/bench knife and see what stands up to use. Ever worked with any ruby/zoisite (light pea green with ruby red inclusions)? Pretty neat stuff to carve. I made a small presentation bird/trout knife with the r/z for handle slabs and it finally turned out great, but I learned a little about just how critical pin fitting is in stone. LOL and show us the results.
